I think there was an adequately bigger gap between Gohan and Cell than with Goku and Cell, as Goku did quite a bit better in his fight than Gohan. Anyways Goku wouldn't even be a factor in this fight as Cell's power gap will be too much for him, then Gohan is taken down once again because of the large power gap between the two.
